How To Use Top Down Estimation In Primavera P6 || dptutorials

In this tutorials, let us see How To Use Top Down Estimation In Primavera P6.

In Primavera, we have a function called "Top down estimation" which help us to calculate an estimated figure for labor and non-labor units based on "estimation weights". It can apply to WBS and activity as well.

In this video I will show you how to do it.

First, let me open a simple project schedule and start assigning a sample resource “Mason” to each of the activity.

By default, each activity will have 40 units because we have given equal duration of 4 days to each activity.

1. Add a column called “Budgeted labor units” so that you can see the budgeted labor units for each activity and WBS.

Now, we will be using the Top down estimation to re-distribute the unit to make it more realistic.

To perform Top-down estimation, you must first assign estimation weights to WBS and activities as well. These estimate weights are nothing but weightages given to WBS and activities that will be used to determine how units are distributed among WBS and activities.

2. Let’s go to the WBS window and customize columns to add “Estimation weight” column. Click ok.

3. Now, let us enter weightages for each WBS item, like 4 for WBS1, 4 for WBS2 and 2 for WBS3.

4. Go back to activities window and add estimate weights column.

5. Give weights for each activity now, like for WBS1 activities, I am entering weights as 7 and 3.

6. For WBS2, I enter weights as 5 each and for WBS3, I enter weights as 6 and 4.

7. Let us go to “Tools” from the menu bar and click on “Top down estimation”

Primavera will show us current units in your project here in this window. You can see the current units as 240 here.

8. Now, you will enter the new units that you want to apply for your project in the Estimated

Units section. I type as 1000 for example.

9. Click on Apply button, you can see that WBS and Activities will have this 1000 units distributed by the weightages that we have given.

See, you can observe that the units have been distributed according to the weightages assigned to them. For example WBS1, the weightage is 40%, so out of 1000 units, WBS1 will have 40%*1000=400 units and out of 400 units, 70% will be for foundation1 i.e., 70%*400=280 units. Similarly budgeted units have been distributed all the activities.

So friends this is all about Top Down Estimation In Primavera P6. With this feature, we can quickly re-distribute units to activities.
